Shingle Roofing vs. Metal Roofing

The one thing that you normally try to figure out when it comes time to replace your roof is what type of roof you will put on your home.  There is a variety to choose from for example you can choose asphalt shingles or metal.  If you use an asphalt shingle you are looking a roof life of approximately twelve to seventeen years.  So, really you would be looking at a re-roofing project anywhere from twelve to seventeen years.  Metal roofs, on the other hand, offer unmatched durability, and long lasting protection for your home.  If you wanted to use a metal roof then you could look at a roof that could last for well over fifty years.  It may outlive you. 

This is a good thing if you are going to stay in your house a long time.  It is also a good thing is you go to sell your home.  This would add value to your home.   Metal roofing shingles vary in colors too.  This is one thing metal has in common with regular shingles.  You would be able to find a company that would be able to provide custom sheet metal roofing profiles made with tin, zinc, aluminum and copper.  This would be considered a specialty roof.  When you start looking at roofs that last up to fifty years, you would be looking at a roof that would cost you more than a shingle roof and you must realize that up front before you price the project. 

This is when it would be a good idea to have a couple of companies come out and provide you an estimate.  Depending on the size of your house will go into the cost factor for your home.   Some companies offer recycled metal.  The green earth friendly roofs keep your roof cooler, the planet greener and may even help you qualify for a tax credit.  It would be worth checking out.  Another great idea is some companies that offer metal roofs that are professionally installed will receive a lifetime labor and material warranty.  When you are looking at the two different types of roofing have a couple of companies come in and provide an estimate. 

Let them walk you through the process especially for the metal roof.  You basically know how an asphalt roof reacts you most likely have one now.  Find out how the warranties work on the craftsmanship, how to handle repairs and what happens if anything is damaged during a really bad rainstorm.  Another thing to look at is if this is an easy decision then you are wrong.  Sometimes when we want to upgrade we try to do the best thing for us but in the end it may be out of your price range.  The one good thing is Sears is the company that provides the professionally licensed contractors and financing.  You may want to listen to see what they have to say between the shingle and metal roofs.
